Classroom Information

Homework:

  • The children have 20-30 minutes of homework each day of the week (with the exception of weekends). Please make sure your child spends time reading every day of the week. This is the most important homework for the year. Weekly reading is to be recorded on the reading log and turned in with homework assignments on Friday. Please don’t feel obligated to record Friday’s reading; I realize mornings can be a busy time of day for families.
  • Please take the time to help your child check his or her assignment notebook for daily homework assignment, and remember to sign your child’s assignment notebook each day.
  • If your child is unable to complete work in class, there may be times when additional homework comes home. It will be labeled with an H and circled. Please see to it that your child completes the assignment and returns it the following day.

Classroom Expectations:

I expect your child to make good decisions about his or her behavior. Every child in our classroom deserves the most positive educational climate for his or her growth, and I believe our classroom affords each child guidance in making good decisions about his or her behavior. I will send home a note with additional information regarding our stoplight system. In addition to this system, the children will work collaboratively to fill up a marble jar when we’re demonstrating good behavior. Once our jar is full, we will have a classroom celebration!

Parent Communication:

Please read weekly newsletters. This letter gives you a general idea of concepts we are covering. In addition, it contains important reminders that will allow your child’s learning experience to become that much more meaningful.

Send me a note or an email (mhealy@palos118.org) if you have a change in your child’s dismissal routine or any questions or concerns you’d like addressed. If you’d like to speak with me directly, you can leave me a voicemail anytime at 708-761-3829.

Absent/Make Up Work:

Class work is not given out ahead of time. Your child will receive his or her work upon returning to school. Unfortunately, it is not possible for your child to make up everything we have accomplished at school. Many times our learning experiences involved hands-on activities, lessons with big books, etc.

Book Clubs:

I will be using Scholastic Book Club. I will send home the order forms each month. This is a wonderful way to build up your “at-home library.” In addition, your participation helps our classroom receive free books and classroom resources which will enhance your child’s learning experiences. When placing an order, make checks payable to “Scholastic Book Club.”

Snacks:

Please remember to send a nutritious snack with your child each day. Some healthy choices include fruit, veggies, yogurt, etc. Please limit your child’s drink selection to bottled water. This, too, will add nutritional value to your child’s diet as we take this supplemental break.

Birthdays:

Through the recommendation of our District’s Wellness Committee, parents are strongly encouraged to bring in healthy treats or non-edible products such as bookmarks, stickers, etc. Your child also has the option of donating a book or children’s game to our classroom.

Super Star:

Each child will have a chance to become a “Super Star.” This experience will allow us to celebrate each individual’s uniqueness. Your child will receive a note explaining how the program works when he or she is selected to be our “star” for the week.

Library:

The children will participate in the “free-flow” system when checking out books from the library. I’ve designated snack break as our “free-flow” check out time.
