Mr. Hrymak’s Weekly Parent Information

Week of November 17, 2008

j0436335Happy Monday.  This week's spelling and vocabulary words are listed below.  The spelling words are compound words.  The story we will read is entitled "Summer of Fire" and is about the fires in Yellowstone National Park during the summer of 1988.  The core skills include reading and understanding nonfiction, possessive nouns, pronouns and antecedents, and writing written responses to a short story.  I am beginning to notice a nice improvement in writing skills over the last few weeks.  Students are starting to use voice and figurative language, in addition to applying their grammar and punctuation skills, more consistently.   The new book talk information was passed out last week.  Please review the book talk outline with your child to help assure that he or she is following the outline.  A copy of the book talk outline is located on my Web page.

This is National Education Week.  Celebrate the week by visiting the Palos West Book Fair this Thursday evening!  The class will preview the books on Monday morning.  We are scheduled to purchase books on Friday morning.

Students are continuing to learn about The Founding of American Colonies during social studies.  We will read about Jamestown, John Smith and the “Starving Time” at Jamestown.  Students will also read about Plymouth and the first Thanksgiving.   Enjoy a fun week!
