To  Bette Wojta’s ELL Site

I have been fortunate to be a part of District #118 since 1998 serving the district’s ELL students. Previous to this, my additional 20 years of teaching experience include that of being a fifth grade teacher/team leader in a suburb just northwest of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

I was awarded my B.S.degree in Education from UW-Oshkosh. My M.S. degree in Curriculum and Instruction was received from National Louis University with an emphasis in ELL.

GOALS

The goals for our second language learners are for them to become proficient in the English language in the four areas of literacy; ie, speaking, listening, reading and writing.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

Our ELL program is a CBE program meaning content-based ELL. This is where English is acquired through the content areas of Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and Math. We utilize push-in content-based services as well as pull-out services for individualized or small group support.

LANGUAGE BACKGROUNDS

Currently, our program includes students of 6 different language backgrounds. The largest language groups consist of Lithuanian and Polish speaking children. Our second language learners are at five different levels of proficiency. These levels range from non-speaking, meaning children who have little or no English, to children who are considered fluent and soon to be dismissed.

ASSESSMENTS

We monitor the progress of English language proficiency through two formal assessments.

The ACCESS monitors growth in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. This is administered to all students in grades K through 8 who are enrolled in the ELL program. The ACCESS is given on a yearly basis until the child reaches proficiency and is exited from the program.

The second assessment is the WAP-T which is the program screener. This is given to students with a home language other than English upon entering the district.
