My
name is Amy Bennett. I was born in Chicago, IL and have been working and volunteering
with children and adults with special educational needs for ten years. I
received my Master’s degree in multi-categorical special education from Saint
Xavier University and I attended Western Michigan University for my
undergraduate degree. Here is where I studied fine arts, and had a chance to
volunteer and create art with adults with special needs. Over the past three years, I have been
working with students with Autism at Elim Christian School in Palos Heights. Here
is where we worked with structured teaching, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
and the Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication-handicapped
Children (TEACCH). During my
time at Elim, I was an assistant teacher for two years and a classroom
teacher for one. Before I began working at Elim, I worked at
the Southwest Coop for Special Education in Oak Forest. Here I worked on
functional skills with high school students in a multi-needs program. When not at school, I enjoy spending time with
my husband of two years and playing with my two dogs Bam and Halloween.
Finally, I also teach two art classes (grades 4-8) Saturday mornings at The
Log Cabin Center for the Arts located at THE CENTER in Palos Heights.
